Using Soft Fonts With WP 5.0
IMPORTANT!!!
Word Perfect updates their product quite often. The enclosed printer driver
file for the DeskJet and the DeskJet Plus (ESFDESK.ALL) will work correctly
on any version of Word Perfect released between 10/15/88 and the June of 1989
release. If you have a version of Word Perfect dated BEFORE 10/15/88 you will
probably have to upgrade to use your DeskJet correctly. If you have a version
dated on or AFTER June 1989 you should modify the printer driver as described
below. Finally, this printer driver is configured for a DeskJet with 256K of
RAM. If you have less RAM you should modify the printer driver to change its
memory limits.
Since you must "*" fonts for the DeskJet the 128K or 256K RAM can be quite
limiting. We recommend using our TSR Download to work around this problem.
You simply lie to Word Perfect and tell it you have a large amount of memory.
(This is done by modfying the printer driver as described below.) Then "*" all
of your soft fonts. Now use TSR Download to send fonts rather than WP's printer
initialize command. NEVER modify your original or only copy of the ESFDESK.ALL
file! Backup first!!
*** JUNE 1989 AND AFTER: ***
You must use the PTR program supplied with Word Perfect to modify the
ESFDESK.ALL file. This modification changes the "Soft Font Format Type".
Type: PTR ESFDESK.ALL. This driver has only 1 printer definition-
"ESF DeskJet/Plus (Additional)" so the cursor (highlight) is already on
the correct printer type. Hit return to select this printer.
Move the cursor down to the second to last menu entry, "Soft Font Format
Type". Hit return. Move down to the line " DeskJet". Use the "*" key here
to move the "*" from "Other" to "DeskJet". Hit F7 twice to return to the
main menu.
Hit F7 again and you will be prompted to save the ALL file. Enter "Y" for
yes, and use the same file name. Hit "Y" for yes when prompted to exit the
program.
*** CHANGING RAM SIZE: ***
If you have less than 256K of RAM in your DeskJet OR you want to use TSR
Download to send fonts instead of using WP's Printer Initialize command, you
need to alter the ALL file to reflect your RAM requirements.
Type: PTR ESFDESK.ALL. This driver has only 1 printer definition-
"ESF DeskJet/Plus (Additional)" so the cursor (highlight) is already on
the correct printer type. Hit return to select this printer.
Press the letter "R" to move to Resources and hit the return key twice. Move
down one line and over to the right two columns with the cursor keys. You
are now positioned on the RAM limit of your machine (256). Change this to
your cartridge value (128) or to 1024 if you are going to use TSR Download
to send fonts to your DeskJet.
Now hit F7 three times. Enter "Y" for yes when prompted to save the file.
(Use the same file name.) Enter "Y" for yes to exit the program.
*** INSTALLING THE PRINTER DRIVER: ***
Enclosed is a new master printer definition file for Word Perfect and the
DeskJet printer, ESFDESK.ALL (Elfring Soft Fonts DeskJet). Your Word Perfect
program must be correctly installed with all utility programs present. This
document assumes you are working with a hard disk! (It is probably not
possible to use soft fonts with WP 5.0 and floppy disks.) YOU MUST ALSO HAVE
AT LEAST 1 - 128K RAM CARTRIDGE!
Step 1
Create a subdirectory to put your soft fonts in. It is MUCH less confusing to
hide all soft fonts in a single subdirectory. Do not place them in the WP 5.0
subdirectory, as you will end up with a giagantic number of files there.
REMEMBER the name of this subdirectory, you will need it later.
Now copy ALL the Elfring Soft Font files you own to this new subdirectory.
Our soft fonts for the DeskJet typically end in the extension ".DJP". Some
other soft fonts may use the ".SFP" or ".USP" file name extensions. In any
case, make sure that all soft fonts from all disks you have purchased are
copied to your new soft font subdirectory.
Step 2
Start Word Perfect and enter <Shift><F7> for the printer menu. Press <S>
for the Select Printer menu. This displays a list of printer drivers currently
installed. Now press <A> for additional printers. Use the arrow keys to
highlight the "ESF DeskJet/Plus (Additional)" name, then press <S> for select.
Word Perfect will now tell you the name of the new ".PRS" file it is going to
create. (If you already have a file by this name WP will ask if you want to
replace it.) Now press Exit <F7>.
Step 3
You are now at the Edit screen for select printers. Press <5> to select
"Cartridges and Fonts". Use the down arrow key to move from the first line
of the next screen (Internal Fonts) to Memory line. You will now see a list
of all soft fonts available for the DeskJet. Use the down arrow key to move
the cursor to each Elfring Soft Font you own and press the "*" key. You may
only mark as many fonts as will fit into your RAM memeory at one time UNLESS
you are using TSR Download to send font to your printer. (See above for this
option.) These fonts must be sent to your printer (printer initialize function)
BEFORE you attempt to print any documents.
Note that all Elfring Soft Font definition lines include the letters (ESF).
Also mark any other soft fonts or cartridges you may own. Finally, press <F7>
twice to return to the Edit Printer screen. (WP will pause as it creates a
new ".PRS" file. Now press <6> or <I> for Initial font. Go through the
list of fonts presented here and pick a default soft font base size. When
the font is highlighted press the <S> key to Select it. Exit from here with
the <F7> key. Press <7> or <D> to specify the disk drive and directory name
for your downloadable fonts. Now press <F7> three times to exit from these
menus.
Step 4
Before you can use soft fonts from within Word Perfect you MUST download
them to your printer. Use the Initialize printer option to send you soft fonts
to the printer. (Or just use our memory resident download program to send
these fonts to your printer any time you want.) Then from within your document
Ctrl-F8 brings up the font menu. This menu lets you select the font to use.
Word Perfect should automatically download any fonts you use in a document.

Notes 1:
All Elfring Soft Font names include the letters (ESF). (This stands for
Elfring Soft Fonts). The font name also includes the point size of the font.
Fixed width fonts have a special naming convention so that you can recognize
them. A proportional font might be called:
(ESF) Roman 12 pt. PS
(ESF) Broadway Bold 24 pt. PS
Note that the letters "PS" stand for a proportionally spaced font. When you
want to use a fixed width font you select a font name that tells you the
point size and the pitch of the font, since you can have more than one font
with the same height but with a different pitch. So a 10 pitch fixed width
Roman font 12 points in height would be named:
(ESF) Gothic 12 pt. 10 pitch
(ESF) Square 12 pt. 12 pitch
